According to this article
there are a few different options when it comes to child birth. It explains
there are nurse- midwifes, they can deliver your baby at home or in a hospital.
This article gives some other options as well like birthing centers, or using a
doctor in a hospital setting. These nurse-midwifes have access to talk to a
doctor for advise if needed. This article states that 90% of births are incident
free. According to Dr. Frank Oski, M.D., Professor and Director, Department of
Pediatrics, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, "Between $13 and
$20 billion dollars per year could be saved in health care costs by developing
midwifery care, demedicalizing childbirth and encouraging breastfeeding."
This seems like a very credible
source and I hope to make my argument stronger by using some of this article. It
covers a lot of information and the more I read it seems like this is a good
find for me!
The next article is from Online Library
Databases I looked up; is water birth a safe option?
I used this website
because I find the articles here very interesting and I like that they are peer
reviewed.
This database also
gives you all the different ways to site sources in MLA, APA, and AMA format.
also this is a cool website because you can down load it in a PDF file!
According to this article,
Water birth” presents no risk to the adaptation of the neonate to extra-uterine
life. We found no increased risk of neonatal infection or aspiration pneumonia”
(Journal Of Maternal-Fetal & Neonatal Medicine ) This article also showed that labor is
quicker, easier, less pain and less traumatic for the baby. There is a lot of debate
concerning if water birth is safe or not. This article shows that water birth
is absolutely a safe practice and benefits mom and baby. This interests me
because I want to know more about how to make the first moments of life in this
world more peaceful. I hope I can incorporate these sources into my paper
without losing my voice. I want to make sure this just makes my paper stronger
and not let this information take it over.

That's a great source that you found about water births and how they are actually very helpful. Something you may want to look into (if you haven't already) is the mammalian dive reflex. It's a reflex in humans that prevents us from even trying to breathe underwater. It sounds like common sense, but it's actually very prevalent in infants. For example when giving oxygen to an infant in emergency medical care you have to give it indirectly across the face rather than onto the face because if it is directly onto the face the reflex will kick in, making them think they are underwater, and they will stop breathing. It's really weird to see in person, but at the same time it's kind of cool that we're wired that way.
ReplyDeleteThank you I will look into that, it sounds really interesting!
DeleteI find the question "is water birth safe?" both interesting and a little bit comical. I think there are fanatics out there on every side of every issue, and a lot of the time common sense doesn't seem to enter into what they're spouting. This is one of those issues. People can find danger in everything. There are people who choose to homeschool so their kids don't have to take the chance of getting kidnapped or hit by a car. Water birth, in my opinion, is as safe as you make it. If you have people around you that can help you make the transition smooth, if you follow recommended guidelines, you and your baby are going to be fine. This is such an interesting and controversial topic. Well done.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteI was excited to see that there was someone doing a similar paper to mine. I always feel pretty "granola" when I talk about this with my friends, and they all think I am crazy. I am also glad, that you are taking a different approach to your paper then I am, this makes it easier to read not only for the instructor but our classmates.
ReplyDeleteI think it is important that women educate themselves on the topic of child birth. If they take the time to look back at their parents, and their parent's parents', and so on, they would see the reality of how today's medicine is interfering with this natural process.
I wonder why women do not ask more questions? Is it simply because they are scared of the pain? or the answers?
Listen here women of the NOW, birthing a child hurts, there is no way around it... so why add to it?
Good job ! I will say your blog is incredibly hard to read with the light color pink. But still nice work .
Yes, I think no matter where you have your baby, in a hospital or at home, pain is there too.

ReplyDeleteSounds like you have a lot of good information. I was wondering about the cost of these home and water births. Does insurance cover these kinds of births? My mom works in a birthplace as a RN and has told me about deliveries since I was little. She never mentioned home or water births. A delivery is a major procedure and I'm glad for all the modern technology at the hospitals. My wife had a problem while giving birth to my son and if we were at home I don't think a mid-wife could have helped. It would be interesting to hear some stories from women who have had home births. The reasons they choose it and if anything went wrong.
ReplyDeleteScott, I looked into your question about insurance covering home births, and as far as I can tell it is state by state. If the midwife is practicing under a legal license, then there is a good chance. I read an article that if a doctor delivers your baby at home, he will be compensated through insurance.
DeleteI agree that modern technology has it's place, but I would argue that it is WAY over used.
